GAF or CertainTeed? Why the Complete Roofing System Matters More Than Shingles Alone

GAF or CertainTeed? Why the Complete Roofing System Matters More Than Shingles Alone

When homeowners begin researching roof replacement, the conversation often starts with shingles.

Which brand is better? Which colour works with the brick? How long will the shingles last? What does the warranty cover?

Those are sensible questions. Yet they can distract from something more important: a roof is not just shingles.

A high-performance roof is a system of components that must work together. Premium shingles installed over inadequate underlayment, poor flashing, or insufficient ventilation may not deliver the performance a homeowner expects.

At Unique Roofing, this system-based approach has shaped how we install residential roofs throughout Toronto, Richmond Hill, Markham, Vaughan, Thornhill, Aurora, North York, and Newmarket.

We work with two of North America’s established roofing manufacturers, GAF and CertainTeed, and hold professional credentials with both.

Why Contractor Certification Matters

There is an understandable temptation to assume that anyone capable of installing shingles can install a premium roofing system.

In practice, installation quality varies considerably.

Roof geometry, valleys, flashing, ventilation, skylights, penetrations, underlayment, and drainage all require judgment and attention to detail.

Unique Roofing is a GAF Certified Roofing Contractor and a CertainTeed Master Craftsman Roofing Contractor.

These credentials reflect manufacturer training and familiarity with specified installation practices. They can also be relevant when determining eligibility for certain enhanced manufacturer warranty programs.

Certification doesn’t mean a homeowner should stop asking questions. Quite the opposite.

Ask what components are included. Ask about ventilation. Ask who provides the warranty. Ask whether workmanship and materials are treated separately. A professional contractor should be comfortable explaining the answers.

What Is a Complete GAF Roofing System?

Homeowners may know names such as GAF Timberline HDZ and Timberline UHDZ, but shingles represent only the visible layer.

A complete GAF roofing approach can incorporate compatible system components beneath and around those shingles.

For example, projects may use GAF Deck-Armor Premium Breathable Roof Deck Protection, appropriate leak protection, starter components, ventilation products such as Cobra ridge ventilation, and matching ridge cap shingles.

The exact configuration depends on the roof.

That is an important point. A roofing system should be designed around the property rather than assembled from a generic checklist.

What About CertainTeed?

CertainTeed takes a similar whole-roof approach through its Integrity Roof System.

Homeowners frequently choose CertainTeed Landmark architectural shingles, including colours such as Pewter, which combines silver and gray tones for a neutral architectural appearance.

Depending on the project, the roofing system can incorporate CertainTeed underlayment, waterproofing components, starter shingles, ventilation, and hip and ridge products.

Again, the real value comes from how those pieces are installed together.

A premium brand name on the shingle wrapper cannot compensate for careless workmanship underneath.

Warranties Need to Be Understood, Not Just Advertised

Roofing warranty language can become confusing quickly.

Terms such as “Lifetime Limited Warranty,” enhanced warranty, workmanship coverage, and wind warranty may sound similar while covering very different things.

Some GAF roofing systems, for example, may qualify for enhanced warranty options when specific eligibility and installation requirements are satisfied. CertainTeed also offers warranty programs tied to products, systems, and contractor qualifications.

Homeowners should ask exactly what warranty applies to their project and request the applicable documentation.

Unique Roofing discusses available warranty options during the quotation process so clients can understand what they are purchasing rather than discovering the details after installation.

Why Premium Roofing Costs More

Two roofing estimates can look similar on the first page while representing very different projects.

One may include basic shingles and minimal accessories.

Another may include premium architectural shingles, high-performance underlayment, leak protection, ventilation upgrades, new flashing, manufacturer-compatible accessories, and enhanced warranty eligibility.

Labour quality matters too.

Proper installation takes time.

That does not mean the highest quote is automatically the best. Nor does it mean a lower-priced contractor necessarily performs poor work. Price alone simply isn’t enough information.

The better question is: What am I actually receiving for this price?

Ontario Weather Tests the Entire Roof

A GTA roof experiences summer heat, thunderstorms, high winds, autumn rain, heavy snow, freezing temperatures, and repeated freeze-thaw cycles.

Shingles handle only part of that challenge.

Underlayment provides secondary protection. Flashing helps manage vulnerable transitions. Ventilation influences attic temperature and moisture. Gutters move water away from the structure.

If one component is weak, the effects may eventually appear somewhere else.

This is why we sometimes recommend addressing gutters, skylights, ventilation, soffit, fascia, or flashing during a roof replacement.

It isn’t about making the project bigger for the sake of it. In some homes, coordinating these components simply makes more technical and financial sense.

GAF or CertainTeed: Which Should You Choose?

There isn’t one universal answer.

Both manufacturers offer respected roofing products and system solutions. The better choice may depend on the home’s architecture, desired shingle style and colour, warranty priorities, budget, and technical requirements.

A good roofing consultation should help you compare those factors without turning the discussion into a sales pitch.

At Unique Roofing, our role is to explain the differences and help homeowners make an informed decision.

Invest in What You Cannot See

The shingles will receive most of the compliments when the project is finished.

Yet some of the most important work will never be visible from the driveway.

The underlayment. Flashing. Starter course. Ventilation. Waterproofing details. Installation around skylights and valleys.

Those hidden components often determine whether a roof continues performing years after the new-shingle appearance has faded.

After more than 15 years in residential roofing, we have learned that quality is rarely defined by one product.

It is the result of good materials, thoughtful system design, experienced installation, and accountability after the job is complete.

Don’t simply buy shingles. Invest in the roofing system protecting everything underneath them.
